Restart MediaTemple Grid Server? Nope.

You can’t restart a MediaTemple Grid Server

I spent my morning trying to restart MediaTemple Grid Server. Turns out it’s impossible. There are plenty of docs explaining how to restart their DV servers, but nothing on GS servers.

Why, I wonder, don’t they have an entry in their Knowledgebase which simple says “Can I restart my MediaTemple Grid Server?”…”No”

That seems like a useful piece of knowledge for their base.

So, if you’re like me and you’ve been searching for a way to reboot your Grid Service box, sorry to disappoint. You can’t.

The good news

The good news is that you probably don’t need to reboot anyway. Most times a reboot is necessary after changing a vhosts or php.ini file. With MT’s GS servers, though, that’s not necessary.

I’m not entirely sure how (not a sysadmin here, you guys), but php.ini and similar settings changes are automatically implemented “within a few moments.”

“But wait!” I can hear you saying. “They said right on the page that you don’t need to restart!” I know, I know. I missed it.

And I assumed. And you know what that means.

So if you did too, don’t feel bad. You’re in good company.
